Rates and booking

How much does it cost to record at Big Nice Studio?

Full-day recording sessions start at $450, including a house engineer. Every project has different goals and a different budget, so get in touch and we'll put together a quote that makes a high-quality recording possible within yours. Hourly time in Little Nice is $60/hour with a house producer, $45/hour self-engineered, and $35/hour for rehearsals.

How long is a recording session?

A standard session is an 8-hour day, and that includes load-in, setup, mixdowns, backups, and breakdown. Plan on about an hour at the end of the day for bounces and backups. Off-hours are available if you need a different schedule.

How far ahead should I book?

Weekdays usually have availability within a few weeks. Weekends book up further out, so reach out early. Your date is held once your deposit is received.

Do you require a deposit?

Yes. In-studio dates require a 50% deposit, and dates are not held until it's received. Deposits aren't refundable, but if an emergency comes up we're happy to apply yours to a future date. The balance is due on the last day of your session.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept Venmo, PayPal, check, and cash, and credit cards by invoice. For Venmo and PayPal, choose the “friends and family” option; otherwise the processing fee is added to your bill.

Do you offer package deals or reduced rates?

Making professional recording accessible is our mission. If you plan to mix or master with us too, decide that before your rate is set so package discounts can be built in. Bradford also offers reduced mastering rates to anyone facing financial hardship.

Your session day

How do I get to the studio, and where do I park?

Head to the bottom of Carrington St in Lincoln. The studio is at the end of the mill building with the black-and-white doorway; follow it down to the right and park anywhere. The main studio door is on the far side of the building, marked with a horseshoe. For Little Nice, enter on the near side of the building by the ramp; its door is immediately to your right.

Can I arrive early to my session?

Please don't. The time before you arrive is when your engineer strings mics, patches, and preps the Pro Tools session so you can start playing as soon as you walk in. Do leave room for traffic, since late arrivals don't get extra time added at the end.

What should I bring to my session?

Bring your instruments and an external hard drive for your own backups. You're welcome to use our house gear, and using the house drum kit cuts setup time a lot. If you want a specific instrument or piece of gear, ask ahead of time, since some pieces are occasionally out for service.

Do you keep my session files?

We store active projects on our studio drives while you're working with us. Once a project wraps, you're responsible for your own files and backups, and we don't offer long-term storage. Stems and alternate prints aren't included automatically, so request them in advance.

Is there food at the studio?

There's a fridge, microwave, coffee pot, and water cooler, and plenty of nearby restaurants deliver or do takeout. There's no smoking inside the building.

Can you help me find session musicians?

Yes. We keep a list of local session musicians we recommend, covering drums, bass, guitar, keys, vocals, strings, horns, accordion, and arranging. Contact them directly about rates and availability.

Little Nice and rehearsal space

What is Little Nice?

Little Nice is our B room: a 1,500 sq ft open-plan studio in the same building, with two isolation booths, the same Millennia HV-3D front end as the main room, Antelope Orion 32 conversion, Pro Tools and Logic, and Genelec 8040 monitors. It's booked by the hour, with a two-hour minimum.

Can I engineer my own session?

Yes. Self-engineered sessions in Little Nice are $45/hour with a two-hour minimum. You'll need to complete an hour-long info and training session first, and you run the session from your own external drive. Start and end times are hard in and out, so pace your session to include load-in, bounces, and cleanup.

Can I bring in my own engineer or producer?

Yes. Little Nice is set up as a self-sufficient room for outside engineers and producers. Gear from the main room can be requested when it isn't in use on a session that day. Contact us to set it up.

Do you have rehearsal space in Rhode Island?

Yes. Little Nice rents as a rehearsal room for $35/hour, with guitar and bass amps, a PA, SM57 and SM58 mics, and drums with hardware included. Load-in and load-out count as rehearsal time, and it's for your band and crew only, with no audiences or shows. Read the rehearsal guide before your first booking.

What is the rehearsal cancellation policy?

Rehearsals take a 50% deposit to book, with the balance due at the session. Cancel at least 24 hours ahead or the deposit is lost, and no-shows are billed in full.

Mastering

How much does mastering cost at Big Nice Studio?

Mastering with Bradford Krieger is $95 per track for digital masters, including a round of revisions. Vinyl and cassette masters are available too, and reduced rates are offered to people facing financial hardship.

Are you an Apple Digital Masters provider?

Yes. Bradford Krieger and Big Nice Studio are on Apple's list of approved Apple Digital Masters providers, so you can deliver high-resolution masters to Apple's streaming services.

How loud will my masters be?

Masters are made to sound loud, competitive, and punchy, working to the current loudness standards of the major streaming services so what you hear in the studio is what your listeners hear at home.

ADR, voiceover and audio post

Does Big Nice Studio record ADR?

Yes. We record sync-accurate ADR loops to picture, with streamers and beeps or freeform, out of a treated isolation booth, and hand off to your editorial team in whatever structure they're cutting in. See our ADR and audio post page.

Can I direct an ADR or voiceover session remotely?

Yes. Sessions run over Source-Connect for real-time, broadcast-quality audio, with two-way video so you and the talent can see each other, timecode sync to picture, and isolated tracks delivered to your spec.

What kinds of voiceover do you record?

Commercial, corporate, e-learning, narration, explainer, and political and advocacy work, plus audiobooks and long-form narration. Our engineers are used to directing talent who aren't professional voice actors.

Do you do dialogue editing and cleanup?

Yes. We handle production audio repair for noise, wind, HVAC, overlapping dialogue, plosives, and sibilance.

What microphones do you use for ADR and voiceover?

Industry-standard options including the Neumann U87, Shure SM7, DPA 4066, Sennheiser MKH 50, and Sennheiser 416, with others available on request, into Millennia HV-3D preamps and Pro Tools Ultimate.

Video, merch and art studios

Do you film live session videos?

Yes. A live video session is $500 for a vintage VHS single-camera one-take shoot (about 2 hours) or $1,500 for a three-camera 4K shoot with professional lighting (about 4 hours). Both cover two songs and include multitrack recording and all post-production, so you get edited videos and mastered audio ready to publish, usually within 48 hours.

Do you print band merch?

Yes. Our screen printing runs flat-rate packages from $225 for 20 one-color Gildan shirts up to $1,400 for 100 three-color Comfort Colors shirts, including blanks, screens, ink, and labor. Turnaround is typically 5–7 business days after artwork approval, and shirts can be bundled with a recording package.

Do you rent art studio space?

Big Nice Space is a shared visual arts studio in the same mill, with spaces from 135 sq ft at $125/month up to 690 sq ft at $500/month, utilities included. Leases run 6 or 12 months, with first month and one month's security due at signing. Tenants get 24-hour secure access, a shared six-arm screen printing press, a work sink, and fast WiFi. It's quiet work only, since we share walls with two recording studios.
